Where you can discover solutions

to face challenges head on and improve your life

Services for Adults

From young adulthood to becoming an adult and beyond have its moments. Things can get super stressful quickly, perhaps leaving you with worry, frustration, and a ton of  unanswered questions. At Discover Counselling Services, you determine your goals and we collaborate on decision-making regarding your treatment and building your wellness plan.

Those who study Human Development over the life span broadly define young adulthood (between ages 18-30). Theories about your age group suggest that young adulthood is a developmental transition to becoming an adult and a number of distinct characteristics begin to emerge, such as:

  • Exploring your identity (e.g., exploring possibilities for school, work, values, beliefs, capabilities, limitations, intimate relationships, and the increasing importance of friends).
  • Experiencing an enhanced sophistication in planning, problem solving, generating ideas, and emotion regulation management because of brain development in the prefrontal cortex. This brain development is now reaching maturity around 25 years of age.
  • An enhanced ability to assimilate thoughts, feelings, rewards, and consequences.
  • Active in taking on leadership roles (e.g., committing to organizations, evaluating others and self-evaluating your own effectiveness.

Theories of adults on the other hand have legal and sociocultural roots. An adult is legally defined as a person who is age 18 and older. For adults, age-related theories suggest development occurs concurrently at biological, psychological and social levels. Adults continue to face:

  • Gains; by establishing a stable career, starting a family, having children, community engagement, and financial security.
  • Losses; such as coping with a job loss, loss of a close one, empty nesting or considering dissolving a marriage or intimate relationship.
  • Stable helpful or unhelpful characteristics; including personality, values, and belief systems.
  • Change and Adaptation (i.e., health concerns, midlife changes, reflection on the life you have already lived, a future that includes questions about mortality and unmet goals and expectations).

As adults continue to face the complexities of life, varying degrees of instability can leave you overwhelmed. On occasion, both young adults and adults may struggle with:

  • Achieving independence
  • Alcohol or substance misuse
  • Anxiety
  • Caring for an aging parent
  • Changing roles
