Teens

Where you can discover solutions

to face challenges head on and improve your life

Services for Teens

The teen years can feel like a rollercoaster ride and for some, it’s not as fun as it sounds. At Discover Counselling Services, tackling and treating the wide range of challenges that can happen is a priority. You will have the opportunity to develop life long skills including how to organize, plan, problem-solve, build on your strengths and manage emotions to name a few. These skills can then be used in situations to help you tolerate some of life’s stressors.

Research suggests that the teen years, also called adolescence (between ages 13-19) is filled with many developmental changes. These changes can leave some teens feeling as though you are “not normal.”

  • Physical changes (e.g., growth spurts and puberty),
  • Social/emotional changes (e.g., self comparison to one’s friends and the development of romantic relationships)
  • Cognitive changes (e.g., thinking abilities expand to include goal setting and making plans)
  • Societal changes (e.g., transitioning to middle or high school and interests in social, political issues)

Let’s be honest for a moment, these changes can be awkward, embarrassing and confusing to you. Now, combine those changes with added stress, worry, and daily hassles, and the following symptoms may appear:

  • Alcohol and drug experimentation/abuse
  • Behavioural issues
  • Body image issues
  • Bullying/harassment
  • Distressing thoughts
  • Eating & sleeping problems
  • Emotion dysregulation
  • Family & sibling conflict
  • Identity questions
  • Isolation
  • Issues with work/school balance
  • Low energy
  • Low self-esteem
  • Misplaced or unregulated anger
  • Mood swings (e.g., anger, sadness)
  • Nervousness or unease
  • Panic attacks
  • Poor coping skills
  • Relationship questions
  • Risk-taking behaviour
  • School issues (e.g., avoidance, inattention)
  • Self-consciousness
  • Struggling to keep friends
  • Trouble with decision making (e.g., College, University, Career)
  • Worry & stress

At Discover Counselling Services, we tackle and treat the wide range of challenges listed above that can happen.

We work together to make sense of the issues you bring to each session and help you understand the impact and control certain issues can have on your life. In session, you will have the freedom and empowerment to identify and build on your strengths to manage and cope.

Individuals in their early teens should be aware that I meet with you and your parents or caregivers for about twenty minutes during your first (60) minute session because the adults in your life may have questions about the therapy process.

For parents and caregivers, it is important to note that no information is shared with adults regarding the teen’s later sessions without the teens expressed permission. However, I do want to hear from a parent or caregiver if you have serious concerns surrounding your teen or are worrying about their safety. When it comes to issues of safety that involve harm to self and harm to others, those concerns are discussed with teens openly.
