Services for Couples
Marriage is hard; relationships in general are also hard. Couples experience moments of ups and downs influenced by a partner’s words, beliefs, emotions, actions, and inaction. The relationship dynamic can activate unique internal experiences for each partner and trigger conflict and distance. At Discover Counselling Services, relationship and marriage counselling guides you to identify unhelpful patterns of interacting and responding to each other and to find your way back to strengthening the emotional bond in your most beloved relationship.
Couples who are distressed or in conflict can become “stuck” in fixed patterns of relating to each other. For example, one partner may attack the other verbally and the other partner may shut down. Both responses are attempts to connect. Outcome research on attachment supports the notion that couples that experience this stuck-ness lack a secure bond and thus each partner is getting less of what they need from the relationship. Anger and shutting down can be an attempt to connect with a partner when your connection breaks.
When working with couples and families, Videotaped/Digitally Recorded sessions are often used as a primary tool to augment therapy work and directly observe treatment delivery. This means that couples in therapy sessions at Discover Counselling Services may be asked to have their sessions videotaped/digitally recorded. Please note videotaped/digitally recorded sessions is not mandatory and for those who do consent, you may revoke this permission in writing at any time. For more information, do not hesitate to reach out.
In session, couples work to create a more secure relationship bond and to deepen your most beloved relationship. Marriage Therapy allows for in-session change processes, where partners communicate their emotional hurts, fears and needs to each other in order to feel connected on a deeper emotional level.
Research has also shown that when couples reconnect at this deeper emotional level, their attachment bond strengthens because you both begin to feel safe and more fulfilled in the relationship rather than stuck in habitual ways of dealing with emotions. Some issue that bring couples to therapy are:
- Addiction/Partner addiction support
- Betrayal of trust
- Blended families
- Communication that is toxic or absent
- Control & Inequality
- Chronic Illness
- Exploring divorce
- Family conflict
- Feeling alone in the marriage
- Feelings of drifting apart
